Top tourist destinations in Rwanda

Kigali

Kigali is clean, calm, and surprisingly pleasant. It sets the tone for the country. The Genocide Memorial is essential — emotionally heavy, but important for understanding Rwanda today. Beyond that, Kigali works well as a base rather than a destination in itself.

Volcanoes National Park (gorillas)

Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s most famous destination and the reason many travelers come here in the first place. Gorilla trekking is highly regulated, professionally run, and feels ethical rather than intrusive. Treks vary in difficulty, but most visitors don’t need to choose anything strenuous to have a meaningful experience.

Mount Bisoke

Mount Bisoke (in Volcanoes NP) is one of the few hikes in Rwanda where you actually get a clear reward at the end—a crater lake sitting right on top of a volcano. If you want to add something active alongside gorilla trekking without overdoing it, this is the obvious choice.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest is dense rainforest with proper hiking trails and a lot of green—everywhere. The canopy walk is the main draw, and it’s worth doing if you’re already here. This park is more about long walks in thick jungle than dramatic viewpoints or wildlife guarantees.

Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is a long freshwater lake with small towns along the shore, basic beaches, boat trips, and decent places to sleep. No big sights, but it’s a good reset after trekking or long drives.
